7 Ways to Help an Addict

Helping someone who is struggling with addiction can be a difficult and complex process, but there are several ways to support them on their path to recovery. Here at Hope Rescue Mission, we walk alongside men and women on their journey to recovery.

Did you know that we also provide an 18-month residential recovery program for women (and their young children) at our Women’s Center? If you, or someone you know, needs help, please reach out!

  1. Encourage them to seek professional help: The first step in overcoming addiction is seeking professional help. Encourage the addicted person to talk to their doctor, a therapist, or someone they trust.
  2. Offer emotional support: Let the person know that you care about them and that you are there to support them. Encourage them to talk about their feelings and listen without judgment.
  3. Help them find a support group: Support groups such as Celebrate Recovery can be extremely helpful for those struggling with addiction. Help the person find a support group in their area.
  4. Help them create a healthy routine: Encourage the person to establish healthy habits such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep.  Diving into God’s Word for healing has been immensely successful for many!
  5. Encourage them to find new hobbies and interests: Finding new hobbies and interests can help the person to stay busy and avoid triggers that may lead to relapse.
  6. Avoid enabling behaviors: Enabling behaviors such as giving the person money, covering up their addiction, or making excuses for their behavior can hinder their recovery. Instead, encourage the person to take responsibility for their actions and to seek help.
  7. Educate yourself about addiction: Understanding addiction and the recovery process can help you to better support the person. Read books, attend support groups, and talk to professionals.

Remember that recovery is a journey and that the addicted person may experience setbacks along the way. Continue to offer your support and encouragement, and celebrate their successes no matter how small they may seem.
